The 2007 Utopia Estate Pinot Noir was awarded the Grand Award of Excellence – Gold Medal for Pinot Noir over $35.00 at the 2010 Oregon Wine Awards. The Oregon Wine Awards is Oregon’s most prestigious wine recognition program to determine by professional consensus of the state’s outstanding Oregon wines of the year. The Oregon Wine Awards is established to recognize, celebrate and promote excellence in Oregon winemaking. The tasting evaluation is a single blind varietal categories in (3) three retail price categories. The Tasting Panel consists of Oregon’s Top Wine Writers, Buyers, Sommeliers,
Wine Directors and Wine Professionals.

Pinot in the Pearl

Pinot in the Pearl! Meet us on May 6 at the first Chehalem Mountains Winegrowers event in Portland. Over 30 wineries, 8 restaurants and many others will be hosting an unprecedented event in tandem with the traditional First Thursday Art Walk in Portland’s famed Pearl District. Wineries large and small will pour their wines alongside premier restaurants such as The Painted Lady, The Heathman, 50 Plates, Aquavira, Gracies’s Restaurant, Phresh Organic Catering, The Sweetest Things Cupcakes and Sweet Masterpiece Chocolates. Whole Foods and Volcanic Minerals Refresher will join us along with the featured vendors Perfect Picnics, A Nose for Wine Tours and Fannucci Oils.

The New Harvest

Well it’s been a busy couple of months at Utopia between harvest and bottling. Due to the record heat this year we harvested our Pinot Noir on September 21st, earlier than any previous year. The timing of the early harvest also coincided with our bottling of the 2008 Utopia Estate Pinot-Noir…

If that wasn’t enough, this last week we also harvested 1 ton of secondary crop for a Pinot-Noir Rose that we will release in Spring 2010. (Secondary crop refers to the fruit high on the vines and out of the primary “fruit zone”. This fruit ripens much later, (usually in November) than the primary crop and will make a beautiful Rose for our tasting room just in time for Spring release).

In addition we have also been prepping the remaining undeveloped section of our vineyard for the final phase of development. This week we ripped the soil and conditions permitting we will disk and lay out the new rows this week and next. When completed our total acreage under vine will be just under 17 acres. At that point we will have no fewer than 14 different Pinot-Noir clones and a large block of Estate 76 Chardonnay for our Estate wines. Sweet!!!
